Capay Mills - Job Opportunity

Would you like to help to build a vibrant, sustainable market for local grains? Do you enjoy
working with your hands, get along well with machinery, or have some interest in sourdough
breads and baking? Are you outgoing and comfortable interacting with the public?
Capay Mills seeks a part-time production and sales assistant to contribute to our growing
specialty grains business.
We’re looking for a trainee capable of assuming day-to-day responsibility for milling and
packaging our artisan flours at our production shop in Esparto (Capay Valley) as well as
representing Capay Mills two or more days a month at farmers’ markets in San Francisco and
Oakland.
Work at the mill involves:
● Creating weekly production schedules based on customer orders and sales
● Weighing, bagging, and transporting grain from storage warehouse to mill
● Preparing weekly grain inventory reports
● Operating two stone mills, with constant attention to flour quality and mill operation
● Calculating ingredient weights and mixing blended flours
● Packaging milled flour in both retail and wholesale packaging
● Learning about different grains and their milling and baking qualities
● Maintaining a clean and food-safe working environment (food safety training a plus)
● Managing grain stored in our warehouse
Farmers’ Market sales involve:
● Driving company van from Esparto to markets (1:45 each way)
● Loading and unloading bins weighing up to 60 lbs. each from the van
● Setting up and taking down booth and sales display
● Accurately recording cash and credit card/electronic sales using mobile apps
● Answering customer questions about flour, grains and baking (instruction provided!)
● Tracking inventory, and submitting sales reports
● Delivering wholesale orders in San Francisco and Oakland/Berkeley after markets close
Additional work opportunities:
● Assisting with field work planting, cultivating, harvesting grain
● Confirming online and email orders, and adding to the weekly production schedule
● Assisting with customer communications (bi-weekly newsletter, emails, order follow-up)
● Helping with installation of equipment into a new production space in Q1-Q2 2021

You should live within a 45-mile radius from Esparto (Yolo County), and have a driver’s license and clean driving record. You should be able to lift 60+ lbs. and be comfortable spending an occasional long day on your feet in a loud and dusty environment. It goes without saying, the position isn’t appropriate for someone with grain or dust allergies.

In return, we guarantee a minimum of 16 paid hours weekly, with additional time (up to 30 hours weekly) paid hourly; the flexibility to set your own work schedule; encouragement to learn more about the grain economy from field to kitchen (including workshop and conference attendance); and an opportunity to join a growing and vibrant community committed to bringing regenerative, sustainable agriculture, local food models, and healthy diets to all segments of society.

We anticipate this expanding into a full-time position within the next 12 months.
